City Continues to Invest in Southside Infrastructure
Enhancements Coming to Putnam Drive and South Meridian Street
May 17, 2018
Soon, Southside residents will enjoy new sidewalks on Putnam Drive and a smooth, freshly paved ride on S. Meridian Street.
"These projects are just two more examples of the many infrastructure enhancements the City is making across the entire community," Commissioner Curtis Richardson said. “Whether on foot, bike or four wheels, these efforts will provide Southside residents with increased mobility and safer travels throughout the area.”
Construction on phase one of the Putnam Drive sidewalk project is now underway, which includes building a new sidewalk along north side of Putnam Drive between S. Monroe Street and S. Meridian Street. Weather permitting, this work is anticipated to be complete by September. During construction, Putnam Drive between S. Monroe Street and S. Meridian Street will be closed to thru traffic. Local traffic will be permitted, and the detour route will be clearly marked.
Phase two of the Putnam Drive sidewalk project will extend the new sidewalk along the south side of Putnam Drive from S. Meridian Street to Country Club Drive. Construction on this phase is anticipated to begin in early 2019 along with additional infrastructure upgrades in the area, including utility and stormwater enhancements.
Crews have also begun work on a project to repave S. Meridian Street from Van Buren Street to Paul Russell Road. They are currently lowering manholes and valve boxes along the roadway. Following this prep work, the repaving is anticipated to begin the week of May 28. Crews will start at Paul Russell Road and work their way north to complete the nearly two miles of road repaving work, which will provide motorists with a smooth, safe ride from Cascades Park to the North Florida Fairgrounds. During daily work hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, there will be alternating lane closures along S. Meridian Street. Weather permitting, the project is anticipated to be complete by mid-August.
